Digital Design Principles

1. Design is a conversation, not a monologue

Design is always a conversation. It is never a monologue, even when it is a sole endeavor. There is always an exchange of ideas that happens as part of the process, even if those are ideas generated within your own mind. It begins when a designer comes up with an idea or gets a brief. The designer then starts the internal dialogue within themselves about how to go about designing what they set out to. This dialogue is informed by all that they know and have experienced, and the quality of which depends on the quality of the “software” of rational thought of that individual. Then the conversation extends to other (thinkers dead and alive, personally and publicly known). This may include a team of other designers who have adopted the same design challenge, the end users, those affected by the end users, those who commissioned the product to be created, and even those we meet through serendipity along the way. As they say, a good idea can come from anywhere. Those of us who look for inspiration outside the confines of the expected typically come across the best insights.

Design with the intent to bring the end user into a constantly evolving conversation with the product and with others who share that space.
